The
School of Information Management and Systems (SIMS) of the
University of California at Berkeley was created in 1995
with an interdisciplinary program aimed at developing the
knowledge and skills required by professionals in the world
of information management.
Given that such a profession requires aspects of computer
science, cognitive science, business, law, library/information
studies and communications, Berkeley was identified as the
ideal place to address this challenge, given its proven
strength in such disciplines; the existence of a substantial
foundation from the School of Library and Information Studies;
the proximity of leading firms in the information industry;
and Berkeley's ability to attract an eclectic group of outstanding
scholars ensuring that SIMS students would have access to
high quality professional guidance and expertise.
SIMS students are taught the skills of locating, organizing,
manipulating, filtering and presenting information, as dictated
by the information revolution. They become familiar with
the technology used to store, organize and retrieve information
in business, government, libraries and academic settings.
SIMS students also learn to manage people, to interpret
the economic and social environment in which their organization
functions and to understand the relevant issues in law,
economics, ethics, and management. Above all, they must
learn to evolve and change at the rapid pace with which
information technology is developing. Graduates typically
find employment in major corporations, government offices,
the media industry, libraries, and academic institutions
- anywhere information is created and managed.
